Jewelry DIY Tutorial: Star-Ring Made of Polymer Clay (“Fimo”) and Leather

As my experimenting with polymer clay makes more and more fun to me, my Fimo equipment grows up as well. Therefore I feel the urge to tinker more different jewelry than just necklaces. And with new cookie cutters from “Staedtler”, I dared to this star-ring with polymer clay and leather. It was inspired by the “House of Harlow 1960 – Sunburst Ring”. For the “Abalone” version of the ring, I used a marbled sheet of wax.

Material And Tools – For This DIY Project You Need

  1. Fimo (polymer clay) in the desired color (for me it’s gold) and polymer clay tools (rollers, polishing sponge, spatula)
  2. A circle and a star-shaped cookie cutter, both approximately the same size (maybe cookie cutter)
  3. Some leather
  4. Ring blank
  5. Craft glue
  6. Pen
  7. Scissors

DIY Tutorial: The Step-By-Step Craft Instructions

DIY Step 1

Roll out the Fimo to about 0.2 in (5 mm) thickness and cut out a round circle.

DIY Step 2

In the center now cut out the star shape. Carefully detach both forms with a spatula from the work surface, press possible deformations (especially in the circle) to the right outline, and bake as recommended.

DIY Step 3

Draw the star shape on the left of the leather and cut it out with 0.1 inches (3 millimeters) addition.

DIY Step 4

Put some glue on the baked and polished Fimo star and stick it at the center of the leather star.

DIY Step 5

Press the star leather from the bottom up through the ring. Finally cut away the remaining leather parts.

DIY Step 6

Seal the star with some glue from the bottom, just let it dry, then attach the ring blank in the center. DONE!

After baking and even polishing the polymer clay surface will remain rather dull. If you want to give the ring more shine, you can treat the surface with a gloss varnish. I personally prefer the matte version.
