New Look For A Simple Top: DIY Flounce Shirt Homemade

Anna asked me for help because she recently ordered T-shirt has turned out to be too short. So, she asked me how to change the top. It was quite clear, her shirt has to gain in length. I’ve decided to ruffles and spiced up a top that I, clumsy as I am, had splotched with Pasta Sauce.

Material And Tools – For This DIY Project You Need

  • A top
  • One, possibly even two men-XL-shirts
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Marker or tailor’s chalk
  • Pins
  • Sewing kit, even better: sewing machine

DIY Tutorial: The Step-By-Step Craft Instructions

DIY Step 1

Turn the men’s shirt inside out and mark each 15 cm (5.9 inches) wide strips with a ruler and chalk (or marker). I have made four valances (strips).

DIY Step 2

Cut the strips along the marks.

DIY Step 3

Now fix the strips side seam to side seam with pins on your top. The distance between the ruffles is about 10 cm ( 4 inches).

DIY Step 4

To get the ruffles on the flounces, gather the strips rough-and-ready by hand with yarn to the width of the top.

DIY Step 5

Fix these flounces with more pins on the shirt.

DIY Step 6

Now sew the ruffles with an elastic (!!!) seam on the shirt. Note that the seam has to be elastic and thus joins in any movement. If you sew only with a regular stitch, your T-shirt will devil, if you just dress it.

DIY Step 7

Finally, remove the temporary stitchings. DONE!

If you want, you can embellish your new flounce shirt with a homemade flower. It took me just a little T-shirt fabric gathered to a flower and fixed with a button in the middle.
